Rose assumed Katey and Patrick might have parked in the short alley behind the few shops on Maple Street; that’s where Rose would have parked. When the alley showed up empty, Rose drove onto Snow Dove Avenue. She checked the alleys lining the shops on both sides of the street.

“Empty. Did I get here first?”

Rose parked in the east alley on Snow Dove Avenue like a deadly spider preparing to crawl out of its web. A high-powered assault rifle with a night vision scope rested in the passenger seat, hideous and anxious to help Rose murder an innocent man. Rose grabbed the gun and stepped out into the rain.

“I’ll watch the shoe shop from one of the roofs across the street. I’ll be able to see the back door to the shop from the roof and, when my target appears, I’ll carry out the perfect kill shot.”

What Rose didn’t know was that Patrick had escaped with Katey. Would Rose have killed Patrick on that dark, rainy night if he hadn’t escaped?

The tragic answer to that question was yes. Rose would have waited for Patrick and Katey to leave the shoe shop—no matter how long it took—and then killed Patrick where he stood. After waiting until nearly sunrise, Patrick and Katey would have assumed Rose hadn’t fallen for Katey’s plan. Eventually, they would have left the shoe shop through the back door, and Rose would’ve been waiting.

Katey’s strange and sudden episode had saved Patrick’s life. Actually, an innocent teenage kid who’d been stabbed to death had saved Patrick’s life. Divine Providence was a great mystery that Katey never questioned.

When the sun began to break over the horizon, giving life to a gray and dismal day, Rose gritted her teeth. She couldn’t remain on the roof all day. People would see her.

“Where are you?” Rose muttered.

The rain had stopped falling, and a heavy fog was rolling in. By noon, a bright sun would burn it away. For the time being, Rose decided to use the fog to her advantage. She had to act fast. Soon, the sun would be up.

Rose climbed down from the roof using a rusted fire escape and ran back to her SUV. She retrieved a metal can full of gas and then ran to the back of Talley Guntry’s shoe shop. Somehow, she knew the shop was empty. Katey was a no-show.

“No matter. I still have to make sure no one sees the security footage.”

Rose kicked open the flimsy wooden door and deactivated an alarm. With precious seconds ticking away, she knew she had to act fast. She quickly doused the dark storage room with gas and then moved into the front of the shop. There, she emptied the gas can on rows of shoes and a wooden front counter and then escaped to the back door.

After throwing the gas can into the storage room, Rose retrieved a box of matches from her jacket pocket.

“As the old saying goes: burn baby burn.” Rose lit a single match and threw it into the storage room.
